Here is a listing of the upcoming Sierra Club hikes in the Santa Barbara area.Hikes are held every Saturday and Sunday and usually meet at the Bank of America. Sat. May 2 FORBUSH FLAT - BLUE CANYON: From East Camino Cielo hike down to Forbush Flat and then on through Cottam campground and Blue Canyon and up to Camino Cielo at the Romero Trail. We return via Camino Cielo. Moderate-strenuous 10 miles. Bring lunch and plenty of water. Meet behind the B of A on upper State St. at Hope Ave. at 9am. PAUL 964-9002 Sun. May 3 URBAN HIKE TO FRANCHESCI PARK: Start near the Mission, walk through the Riviera, then up the "1000 steps" to a great view of the city and harbor. Return via Las Tunas Rd. Some steep sections. May 9 WEST FORK COLD SPRING TO LOOKOUT: Cancelled due to fire and air quality issues. Sun. May 10 SUMMERLAND SCENIC WALK: This is an easy 1.7 mrt walk around the hills and streets of Summerland. We will start at Lookout Park in Summerland and walk up Ortega Ridge via Evans Ave. and the Ortega Ridge Ranch connector trail. We will take the short path to Ortega Ridge Rd. and catch our breath. We will follow the extension of this trail into the hills back of Summerland, returning to the streets of Summerland at Olive Ave. We will return to Lookout Park via Banner Ave. Bring a light snack and water. May 17 THREE POOLS BEYOND SEVEN FALLS: Cancelled due to fire and air quality issues. Sat. May 23 DEVEREUX POINT: Stroll slowly exploring around this creek area to the shoreline. May 24 GAVIOTA CAVES EXPLORATORY: Hike from Gaviota beach to the caves and wind tunnels in the ridges above. This will involve off-trail cross-country exploration. May 30 CANINE HIKE COLD SPRING TRAIL TO MONTECITO PEAK: Cancelled due to fire and air quality issues. Sun. May 31 GAVIOTA EAST: This is an easy 4 mrt hike on the eastern portion of Gaviota State Park, bordering US 101. We’ll start near the oil processing plant, follow the original pavement of US 101, then walk to a spot overlooking the Gaviota Pass rest area. Long pants are recommended as the route may be brushy in spot. Bring lunch, water and sun protection. Meet 9am at the Bank of America parking lot, Hope & State St. GERRY 964-5411 Sat. June 6 ENNISBROOK: Morning walk through this Montecito area with large trees and plants near San Ysidro Creek. Flat, slow paced 2-3 miles. June 13 TRAILDAYS: Meet with other organizations for a Forest Service sponsored annual traildays to help maintain local trails affected by the recent fires. Bring gloves, lunch and water. June 14 GAVIOTA PEAK: Car pool to Gaviota and hike up past the hot springs to the top of Gaviota Peak. Lunch on top and back down the other side. About 6mi but a good climb up to the peak, moderately-strenuous. MONIKA 886-9868 Sat. June 20 TEQUEPIS TRAIL: Car pool to trailhead near Cachuma Park and hike up North side of the Santa Ynez Mts. June 21 ENNISBROOK-VALLEY CLUB LOOP: This 5 mrt moderate hike starts at the Ennisbrook trailhead. We will travel through Ennisbrook, mostly on roads, taking the old trail routes where possible. We will then take the Coffin Family/Valley Club trails to the Summerland Reservoir for a short lunch stop. Return will be via segments of the Valley Club trail, Sheffield Road and the perimeter Ennisbrook trail. Bring water and a light lunch. Meet at the Bank of America parking lot, Hope & State, at 9am. GERRY 964-5411 Sat. June 27 CANINE HIKE RATTLESNAKE TRAIL: Hike up a wooded canyon with scenic views to meadow. Mostly shaded trail. Moderate 3.5 mrt, 1000 ft. elevation gain. Well behaved dogs welcomed and encouraged; must be leashed. Bring snack and water for you and your canine companion. Hikers without dogs welcome too. Meet at B of A parking lot at 8:00 a.m. NOTE EARLY START TIME. Hike limited to ten dogs - please call to reserve your dog's place. SALLY 689-7820 Sat. July 4-6 BACKPACK COTTONWOOD LAKES: Moderate backpack, 12.5 miles Rt. with 1000 foot gain to Muir Lake. This is one of the most beautiful areas in the Sierras. You will to fall in love with the Sierras. Saturday, day-1, hike in. Day-2 spend it at the lake or join the group to visit nearby lakes, lake 4, 5 and 6th. There will be some cross country hiking involved. Bring goodies to share for Saturday happy hour. July 18 SAN JOSE CREEK LOOP: This is an easy 3 mrt hike, exploring the neighborhood trails and roads of San Jose Creek in North Goleta. We will begin near the intersection of N. Kellogg and Calle Real and follow the creek on trails and adjacent roads. We'll travel north of Cathedral Oaks Rd., then return via creek trails, retracing part of our initial route. Bring 2-3 liters of water, lunch, snacks, bug repellent, hat, swimsuit, hiking shoes, and sandals for water crossings. August 2 TRESPASS TRAIL: Easy to Moderate Hike from Gaviota Peak/Hot Springs trailhead along a little-used loop trail. About 3-4 mrt with some optional side pieces possible. August 8 GAVIOTA LOOP: A portion of this 4 mrt hike will take the little-used Woodland Trail. We start from the northern end of the park, taking the Ortega Trail which connects with the Overlook Fire Road. Instead of continuing to the lookout point, we’ll take the Woodland Trail to the top of the ridge, then circle back to our starting point. Be prepared for some brushy sections. About 7.5mi RT; 2000' elevation loss/gain. Decent shade on the North side of the mountain. Moderately strenuous. Bring lunch and water. August 29 CANINE HIKE ROMERO CANYON: Moderate hike up hill along Romero Creek, mostly shaded trail, then back down the fire road. Total 6 miles, 1500 ft elevation gain. Saturday, Day 1, hike 7.5 miles to Thousand Island Lake at the foothills of Banner Peak. Sunday, Day 2, day spend a leisure day at the camp or hike to Garnet lake and vicinity, Day 3, Return via Pacific Crest High Trail which provides breathtaking 180 degree views of Ansel Adams Wilderness. Possible we will see fall colors, Golden Aspens. Bring goodies to share for Friday and Saturday happy hour.
