The U.S. Forest Service announces new campfire restrictions for portions of the Los Padres National Forest.

Beginning Friday, building, maintaining, or using a campfire, stove fire or barbecue will be allowed only in approved recreation sites. This is in response to the significant increase in visitors to the forest and is all aimed at preventing wildfires.

Violators of the new restrictions are subject to a $5,000 fine or six months in prison.

Forest officials say the order will be in effect until further notice.
